About Belkor Bay
Emma McGuinness
founder of Belkor Bay
At the time, I began to set up my own business offering keratin treatments to clients who coveted the healthy, glowing hair we are so used to seeing in beauty commercials. As time went on, I came to realise that the aftercare on the market fell short of this vision.
My clients were not getting the best, long-lasting results out of their treatments and I wanted to find a solution for this. I began exploring ways this could be done and found out that sodium chloride and sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS), ingredients found in most shampoos and conditioners, were destructive to what I was trying to achieve. Working against me by drying out the hair and taking away the natural shine I was trying to give back. I needed to create a haircare line that would omit these ingredients whilst still feeling luxurious and encompassing all the things we associate with great haircare. That is how Belkor Bay was born. A range of products free from sodium chloride, SLS and parabens that gets the best out of my client’s hair at an affordable price.
After three years of research my vision has finally been realised. I am happy with the formula and proud to use it on my customers. I hope you love it as much as we do!
What is a keratin treatment?
Keratin Treatments
Keratin treatment (also known as a Brazilian blowout) is a chemical process that smooths, shines, and straightens the hair. It is essentially a customised formula blended by a hairstylist to suit your hair’s needs. It works by penetrating hair follicles, injecting the porous areas with keratin which is an essential hair protein.

months we recommend Belkor Bay as your post-treatment brand. Designed with
keratin lovers in mind and free from sodium chloride and SLS our formulas have

Why should I switch to sodium chloride and SLS free shampoo and conditioner?
Sodium Chloride
Sodium chloride is essentially table salt. It is a key ingredient in many shampoos #and conditioners containing sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS). It gives shampoo the thick, easy to spread consistency that we have come to expect and desire.
Why is it detrimental to hair health?
– Sodium chloride is a hygroscopic substance meaning that it absorbs moisture from its surroundings. Spreading it onto the hair can promote dryness by stripping it of its natural oils. This can cause scalp irritations and make hair strands brittle.
– Sodium chloride can also affect coloured hair by potentially stripping away the top layer of the hair damaging its natural protective barrier.
– If your hair is keratin treated, it is advisable to avoid products that contain sodium chloride because it’ll reverse the effects of what can be a costly treatment.
– Likewise, if your hair is dry or naturally curly it is best to opt for sodium chloride and SLS free formulas.
Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (sls)
SLS is the chemical responsible for turning your shampoo into the rich, foamy lather that we have come to expect. It also works as a surfactant, dissolving oil-based dirt so that it can be rinsed away.
If it cleans my hair, why is it detrimental to its health?
– Shampoos containing SLS are so efficient at cleaning that they can actually strip the natural oils from your hair. This can lead to rough, dry, and brittle feeling hair as well as, a dry and irritated scalp.
– This is especially problematic for anyone with dehydrated hair e.g. naturally curly texture, colour treated or chemically processed hair. As well as people who suffer from skin conditions such as eczema, dermatitis, or psoriasis.
– Shampoos containing SLS can also cause coloured hair to fade at an increased rate.
